مصنف هذا الكتاب هو عبد الرحمن بن محمد بن عسكر شهاب الدين البغدادي المالكي، مدرس المدرسة المستنصرية، كان فقيهاً عالماً زاهداً سالكاً طريق الزهد والصلاح والعبادة، وله في ذلك تأليف حسن، وله التصانيف الحسنة المفيدة منها كتاب المعتمد في الفقه. غزير العلم، ذكر فيه شهور الأقوال غالباً، وكتاب العمدة في الفقه، وكتاب إرشاد السالك إلى إشراف المسالك في فقه الإمام مالك هو من أبدع ما صنف في الفقه المالكي، ومن أقصر المتون وأجمعها للأحكام الفقهية، فقد اشتمل على أحكام كثيرة لا توجد إلا في المطولات.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذا الكتاب يسير على طريقة مالكية العراق، إذ أن لهم آراء في الفقه تخالف آراء غيرهم من مالكية الأقطار الأخرى، فقد ترى فيه الرأي راجحاً قوياً وهو ضعيف عند غير العراقيين، وقد ترى فيه الرأي ضعيفاً وهو مشهور قوي عند غيرهم أيضاً، غير أن هذه الآراء المذكورة في هذا الكتاب مع مخالفتها لغيرها قد تكون قوية في الواقع مؤيدة بالدليل الذي تأويله، وقد تكون ضعيفة لا سند لها يمكن التعويل عليه إلا الرغبة في حملها على ما يرى أصحابها وهم في سبيل ذلك يركبون الشطط، ويبعدون عن سواء السبيل.
