هذه دراسة وصفية تعريفية بالمذهب الشافعي ابتداءً من سيرة مؤسسه الإمام الشافعي رضي الله عنه وحتى سنة 1423 هجرية، وقد جاءت مشتملة على بابين وخاتمة: تناول الباب الأول الإمام الشافعي بوصفه مؤسس المذهب، وكان ذلك في ثلاثة فصول، تضمن الأول منها عرض سيرة الإمام الشافعي وما اتصل بها منذ ولادته في غزة سنة 150 هجرية إلى وفاته في مصر سنة 204 هجرية، مقسمة إلى ثمان مراحل، بهدف الوقوف على العوامل المؤثرة في تكوين الشخصية الاجتهادية الكبيرة للإمام المؤسس، رجاء أن تكون هذه الطريقة نوعاً من التجديد في منهج الترجمة للأئمة الأعلام.
أما الفصل الثاني فقد تناول علوم الإمام الشافعي، وإحاطته بفقه وأصول كل من الإمامين أبي حنيفة ومالك بن أنس، وإطلاعه على فقه كل من الإمامين الأوزاعي والليث بن سعد، بهدف استجلاء وفرة مقومات الاجتهاد المطلق عند الإمام الشافعي على أوسع مدى متصور في عصره.
أما الفصل الثالث والخير من هذا الباب، فقد عرض مصنفات الإمام الشافعي، سواء أكانت مفقودة أو مطبوعة، أو ما تزال مخطوطة حتى زمن كتابة هذه الرسالة، مع الإشارة إلى ما وقع فيه بعض الباحثين من أخطاء حول نسبة بعض الكتب إلى الإمام الشافعي، أو لبس في تسميتها أو في وصفها.
وتناول الباب الثاني من هذه الدراسة المذهب الشافعي، وكان ذلك في فصلين، تضمن الأول منهما-وهو أهم الفصول وأطولها-عرض التطور التاريخي للمذهب الشافعي من خلال تقسيمه إلى ستة أدوار، بهدف الوقوف على العوامل المؤثرة في ظهور المذهب وانتشاره، ثم في استقراره وعدم اندثاره، مع التعريف بأبرز أعلام الشافعية في كل دور، وجهودهم في خدمة مذهبهم، وأبرز مصنفاتهم وآثارهم العلمية.
أما الفصل الثاني فقد عرض جانباً كبيراً من مصطلحات علماء الشافعية في كتبهم، مع ترتيب مصنفاتهم الفقهية والأصولية المتداولة في زمن كتابة هذه الرسالة، بهدف تسهيل الاستفادة منها، على طلبة العلم الشرعي والعلماء والباحثين في الفقه الإسلامي. وأخيراً كانت الخاتمة التي أظهرت النتائج التي توصلت إليها هذه الدراسة.
