تبدو رواية (باب الجمر) للوهلة الأولى، وكأنها بحث عن باب متخيل، يدخل منه الروائي وليد إخلاصي إلى حقيقة التاريخ الإجتماعي لمدينة حلب الشهباء.. لكن الأمر على ما يبدو أبعد من هذا بكثير.
تقوم رواية "باب الجمر" على عالم من الطقوس والحكايات والإحتفالات والأحلام والرجاءات والمخاوف الوثيقة الصلة بالروح الجماعية الشعبية، التي تعيد اكتشاف الحكاية الشعبية السورية.
وفي هذه الرواية تحضر روح المكان "بمعنى فضائه الشعري الروحي الإجتماعي" تحضر على نحو مميز، وتشكل بعداً أساسياً يوجه عالمها الروائي برمته، و "يستحضر الروح الحلبية المحلية" كما يرى الدكتور فؤاد المرعي، وهي: "عمل فني يستحضر مكاناً حلبياً يعطيه النكهة الحلبية" ويُبنى بروح محلية شعبية ...
لقد أراد وليد إخلاصي أن يكتب تاريخ حلب - تاريخ المدينة، بكل زخمها وعنفوانها، وناسها الطيبين، إنه يكتب ما يقول عنه: "هذا تاريخي، صار أنا".
