يشكل هذا الكتاب محاولة لإضاءة ما هو مظلم من حياة وعلوم "يوحنا المعمدان الآسيني-المندائي" العنوان الذي اختاره الكاتب شربل عبسي للبحث في يوحنا المعمدان في كل ما توُفر له من معلومات من الكتب المقدسة، والأناجيل المنحولة، والأحاديث النبوية، وعند الآسينيين والمندائين. وعند الباحثين، القدماء منهم والمعاصرين، وفي اي كتاب ذكر اسمه، فاسحاً المجال أمام القارئ لكي يحلل ويستنتج هو بدوره، ماذا تخبأ قصة يوحنا المعمدان، وكيف جرى التعبير عنها في الأسفار المقدسةن وخاصة أن الإنجيليون الأربعة (متى، مرقسن لوقا، يوحنا) اختلفوا في سرد قصة يوحنا المعمدان، وهذا الاختلاف برأي المؤلف لم يكن اختلافاً سطحياً يُبرز، إنما كان اختلافاً جوهرياً، مع الإشارة أن الإنجيليين الأربعة لم يوضحوا لنا معمودية المسيح وما كان الهدف منها وخاصة في مسألة العماد، فهل كانت معمودية السيد المسيح هي معمودية توبة لغفران الخطايا؟ أم أنها تعني أن السيد المسيح قد تتلمذ على يوحنا المعمدان؟ فرسالة السيد المسيح، كما ظهرت في الأناجيل، كانت بدايتها في المعمودية على يد يوحنا المعمدان. الكثير من خفايا يوحنا المعمدان ورسالته وعلاقته بالسيد المسيح، والغاية من إرساله إلى هذا العالم يذكرها هذا الكتاب مع المناقشة والتحليل...
