اتخذ المندائيون الصَّمت سبيلاً قويماً في الحفاظ على كيانهم الدِّيني ولغتهم المندائية عبر دهور طويلة، خدمهم غموض لغتهم الدِّينية، التي لا يفقهها مواطنوهم من الأديان الأخر.
إن طغت تسمية الصَّابئة على هؤلاء، إلا أن أسمهم المندائي هو الأصل، نسبة إلى مندادهي الملاك الأول، بهذا عُرف بيت عبادتهم بالمندي، أي معرفة الله تعالى، وكشف عوالم الكون للإنسان.
يحوي كتابنا هذا تحقيقاً لكتاب عبد الحميد أفندي بن بكر أفندي عبادة "مندائي أو الصائبة الأقدمون"، وهو أول كتاب مطبوع بالعربية، على حد علمنا، حول الدين المندائي كُتب (1925)، ونُشر 1927، وجاء حصيلة حوار مباشر مع رئيس الطائفة المندائية بالعراق، قبل أكثر من ثمانية عقود.
وجاء في كتاب عبادة "قصدت بذلك الإطلاع على أساس هذا الدين، وإن الرجل لا يعرف فضل دينه إلا وإنه يعلم شرائع الأمم السائدة"؛ إن الدين المندائي، على حد عباراته، دين خفي عن أبصار المحيطين، فحاول وضعه تحت أبصار العراقيين، مع أن الغرب اهتم به منذ القرن السابع عشر.
