إن مؤلف هذا الكتاب، هنري شابيرو، صحافي أميركي متزوج من امرأة روسية. وقد هجر أخيراً موسكو حيث قضى إحدى وعشرين سنة، كان خلالها مراسل وكالة "يونايتد برس" الأميركية. وهو، كما يبدو من كتابه، واسع الإطلاع على الشؤون السوفياتية، يعرف رجالات الكرملن عن كثب، ويكتب متوخياً سرد الحقائق ووصف الوقائع الراهنة، مما يجعل لهذا الكتاب شأناً كبيراً بالنظر إلى الاتجاه الجديد الذي اتخذه الاتحاد السوفياتي بعد موت ستالين، وإلى التأثير العميق الذي سيحدثه هذا الاتجاه في العالم.
على أن وليم ل.ريان، مراسل وكالة "اسوشيتد برس" يتهم زميلة ومنافسه شابيرو بالميل إلى مالنكوف وبالدفاع عن العهد الروسي الجدي، ولكن هذا الاتهام لا يقلل من قيمة ما جاء في هذا الكتاب من ملاحظات دقيقة، وشروح ضافية، وحوادث كانت مجهولة حتى الآن، وإحصاءات على جانب كبير من الأهمية. كل ذلك يجعل من كتاب شابيرو فتحاً جديداً وموفقاً في إيضاح الشؤون السوفياتية الغامضة.
