لقد باشر مؤلف هذا الكتاب بكتابته في منتصف شهر آذار من العام 1953 أي ببعد أيام قليلة من موت ستالين، وكان يقصد من وضع هذا الكتاب مراجعة العهد الستاليني واستخلاص بعض النتائج والمتوقعات. وكان المؤلف قد توقع منذ الفصل الأول بحدوث تفسخات وانفصامات في روسيا أثر وفاة ستالين، لكن كثيراً من أرباب الاختصاص في الشؤون الروسية لم يوافقوه على رأيه آنذاك فماذا حدث؟ لم يكد المؤلف يفرغ من كتابة الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب حتى تسارعت الأحداث بشكل أكثر مما كان يتوقعه، فحدثت تغييرات جذرية كبرى في موسكو، كان أولها إصدار حكومة مالنكوف عفواً عاماً عن المحكومين إبان العهد الستاليني، كما شرعت بتطهير الجو الفاسد الذي شاع هناك أثر فضيحة ما يعرف بمؤامرة أطباء الكرملين الملفقة. وهكذا فإن الغاية الأولى-كما يقول المؤلف-من وضعه هذا الكتاب هو تقديم تفسير لذلك التغيير التاريخي الذي شمل روسيا بعد وفاة ستالين، وهو تفسير يستند إلى الوقائع وتحليل الاتجاهات الأساسية الفاعلة في المجتمع السوفياتي، كما حاول أن يقدم للقارئ بعض توقعاته عما يمكن أن يحدث مستقبلاً في الاتحاد السوفياتي.
