"تأملات Tinkers" الرواية الأولى لقارع نحاسيات يدعى "بول هاردينغ" والفائزة بجائزة بوليتزر للسرد للعام 2010. وفي هذا العمل يصور الراوي الأيام الأخيرة لأب يصارع الموت ومن حوله أحفاده وعائلته. فمن على فراش الموت تبدأ قصة جورج كروسبي، وهو يستعيد أحداث طفولته المضطربة كابن أكبر لبائع متجول يدعى هوارد مصاب بداء الصرع. وفي الرواية يستعير بول هاردينغ أدوات من مهنته كأخصائي في تصليح الساعات، لوصف الواقع الحزين لحياة بطله جورج كروسبي، وهو يتذكر بألمْ طفولته البائسة مع أبيه المريض ونوبات الصرع التي كانت تصيبه. البداية النصية للرواية تفتتح بمشهد الأب جورج يرقد على فراش الموت في غرفة المعيشة في منزله، وقد أحاطت به الساعات القديمة التي أصلحها. يرى جورج أن جدران الغرفة بدأت تتداعى من حوله. والشبابيك تخرج من مكانها، والسقف ينهار، ويقع الركام فوق رأسه، محطماً معه أشياء تلخص كل سني حياته: قصاصات صحف، صور قديمة، معاطف صوف، أدوات صدئة، وساعات نحاسية قديمة. ثم ما يلبث أن يتخيل أن غيوماً من السماء تقع عليه، وتتبعها النجوم، حتى يغطيه الليل كالكفن. وعندها يبدأ بالهذيان، في نوبات تستحضر صور الموت، ورغم أنه مصلح للساعات، إلا أنه قد أصبح الآن حراً من قيود الزمن والذاكرة المألوفة، كي يلتحق بوالده الميت الذي كان بائع متجولاً ومصاباً بالصراع العصبي، والذي انقطعت أخباره قبل سبعة عقود. وفي هذه العودة بكل ما تحمل من ذكريات وآلام، وطفولة بائسة وفقيرة. يبدو الأب، يستعيد عالماً غير مبالٍ به. ولكنه يمتلئ بالقلق والخوف. "Tinkers" عمل روائي يقود قارئه إلى شعوران متمايزان: الأول؛ أن الألم في قلبك والحيرة في روحك تعني أنك ما زلت حياً، ما زلت إنساناً، ما زلت قادراً على رؤية جمال العالم والثاني؛ يقول لك توقف. وتذكر كم بقي من الزمن، بل من الساعات على وفاتك؟
