الخليج، هو شريان التجارة والحرب للملوك والأمراء والحكام الذين يهمهم وصول الحرير والجواهر واللآلئ والكهرمان والملابس الموشاة بالذهب والفضة لإسعاد شعوبهم في الغرب.
كما هو الشريان الحيوي للأساطيل البحرية التي تنقل الجنود والمؤن إلى بقع الجزر شمال وشمال غرب "مضيق هرمز" ووسط الخليج بهدف تأمين الخليج.
ولعل ما يدخل في واجب حركة الأساطيل البحرية في الخليج هو تقديم المساعدة للدين المسيحي في التبشير على حساب دين الإسلام بعد ظهوره، في القرن السابع الميلادي.
بدأت ولى معالم الصراع السيطرة على منطقة الخليج في القرن الرابع قبل الميلاد، وفي وقتها كان الصراع دائراً بين بلاد فارس واليونان (الرومان)، وعندما وصل الخبر إلى القائد الروماني الإسكندر المقدوني "تنبه إلى الأهمية التي تتمتع بها منطقة الخليج، وقال قولته الشهيرة "أنني لا أستطيع تأمين مقامي في مصر إذا كان الفرس يسيطرون على هذه المنطقة البحرية"، ودعته إلى إرسال أسطول بحري بقيادة القائد اليوناني "نياوخوس" لإنجاز مهمة إستطلاع السواحل الشرقية لخليجي عُمان والعرب، قبل القيام بالغزو للبقع الجغرافية على ساحل الخليج الشرقي والغربي، غير أن وفاة الإسكندر المقدوني المفاجئ عام 333م هو من أوقف حركة الأسطول البحري.
