كان مجتمع الكوفة من المجتمعات التي اختلف فيها المؤرخون قديماً وحديثاً؛ فمن متهمٍ لهم بالغدر والنكوص والتخاذل وآخر يتهمهم بالإنحراف والجبن، وذكروا لذلك إستدلالات وبراهين واعتبروا هذا المجتمع غير كفوء لأسناد المصلحين من الثوار ... واستدلوا بأحداث تاريخية مأساوية تبدأ بأسناد أهل الكوفة لكل ثائر على الباطل ودعمه وتنتهي بتركه وحيداً في الساحة.
بين وجهتي النظر هاتين يدور موضوع كتاب "الكوفة بين الولاء والغدر" للمؤلفة آمنة محمد التي حاملت تسليط الضوء على الواقع الكوفي بكل جوانبه في مراحله التأريخية المتعاقبة ودراسة التجارب التي كان مصيرها الإحباط وأهمها ما جرى مع الإمام الحسين عليه السلام ورسوله مسلم بن عقيل وما حدث في واقعة ألطف التي قامت فصولها على خذلان أهل الكوفة لمسلم بن عقيل، ثم الحسين عليه السلام إلى غيرها من الوقائع المتلاحقة، كما تم إلقاء الضوء على الكوفة في زمن الخليفة عمر والخليفة عثمان، وفي عهد الإمام علي رضي الله عنه ودورها في المواجهة مع أبناء الإمام الحسن والحسين، وسياسة معاوية في تدعيم سلطانه. وهكذا تكشف المؤلفة عن حياة بأكملها، عاشها أهل الكوفة، من الناحية السياسية والدعوية ومواقف رجالاتها من الأحداث التي مرت بها ودورهم فيها ومنهم: حجر بن عدي الكندي، وعمرو بن الحمق الخزاعي، ورشيد الهجري، ومالك الأشتر، وصعصعة بن صوحان ... وآخرون، وبهذا يكون الكتاب محاولة لتلمس خيوط الحقيقة فيما جرى داخل المجتمع الكوفي خلال مراحل التاريخ الإسلامي.
