كتاب تخطيط المدن، والذي يعد من الكتب المهمة في هذا التخصص من حيث منهجه ومضمونه، إذ تعاني كليات وأقسام التخطيط من مشاكل في توفير مصادر تضم المفردات الأساسية في هذا المجال، فالتخطيط علم متجدد يتطور بشكل مستمر مع تطور التقنيات، كما انه يعتمد على ما يستجد من أفكار حديثة مصدرها كل المتخصصين فيه سواء المهندس أو الجغرافي أو الإقتصادي أو الإجتماعي، أو أي تخصص آخر يصب في هذا المجال، إن الحاجة إلى التخطيط ضرورية جداً لعلاقته المباشرة بحياة الإنسان، فسكن الإنسان ومكان عمله وترفيهه وتنقله من مكان لآخر يرتبط بالتخطيط بشكل مباشر، لذا تعاني مدن معظم الدول العربية من مشاكل تخطيطية انعكست سلباً على حياة سكانها، مثل مشاكل السكن وتوزيع الأنشطة والإستعمالات المختلفة، ومشاكل نقل ومرور وتلوث، ومخالفات تخطيطية، هذه المشاكل تعود إلى قلة الإهتمام بالتخطيط وممارسته من قبل أشخاص لا تتوفر لديهم خبرة والكفاءة فيه، لذا تتراكم المشاكل مع توسع المدن وتنوع أنشطتها، فالجهل بالتخطيط أحدث خللاً في توازن توزيع إستعمالات الأرض، وهذا ينعكس على كفاءة أداء وظائف المدينة، إذ يواجه الإنسان مشاكل في الحصول على الخدمات وفق المعايير المعتمدة محلياً أو عالمياً، سواء كانت الخدمات المجتمعية أو البنى التحتية، ففي الوقت الذي يزداد فيه السكان بشكل عام وتركز معظم تلك الزيادة في المدن، وهذا يحتاج إلى توفر خطط مستقبلية لإستيعاب تلك الزيادة دون مشاكل، إلا أن مدننا تعاني من مشاكل متراكمة.
