يستند الكتاب الحاضر على "الرسائل" و"اليوميات" التي هي جزء من أوراق أسرة "ماينس" الخصوصية -أي "سلسلة ماري اليزابيت هاسكل -خليل جبران" المحفوظة في "مجموعة الجنوب التاريخية" في مكتبة جامعة نورث كارولينا، تشابيل هيل.
وتحتوي المجموعة على 325 رسالة من جبران إلى ماري في السنوات 1908-1931، و290 تقريباً منها إليه، بالإضافة إلى دفاتر يومياتها الـ 47 والمؤلفة من خمسة سطور اليوم الواحد، والتي سجلت ماري فيها نشاطاتها الخاصة وملاحظات موجزة عن اجتماعاتها بجبران. فهناك سبعة وعشرون دفتراً خصصت لوصف مسهب لاجتماعاتهما، وتتضمن فقرات منقولة من آرائه في الأدب، والفن، والفلسفة، والدين، وتصف ما كان جبران عاكفاً على عمله، وثيابه، وصحته، وحميته عن الطعام.
ولو كانت "الرسائل" و"اليوميات" لتنشر جميعاً، لتضخم هذا الكتاب إلى آلاف الصفحات. ولعل نشرها بكاملها رهن المستقبل. أما هنا، فقد تم معالجت النصوص بملء التصرف في الاقتطاع والصياغة والاختصار، والهدف من ذلك إنما نشر ما يكون ذا فائدة لأرباب الاختصاص، ثم سرد قصة العلاقات بين الاثنين سرداً متسلسلاً عن طريق استعمال كلامهما بحرفيته. فبعض السحر الذي تحدثه هذه "الرسائل" و"اليوميات" ناتج عن الأضواء التي تسلطها على صراع جبران الباطني للانسجام مع نفسه أولاً، ثم مع عالمه وأما أهم ما هو مثير وغير منتظر فيها، فهو صراحة الوقائع والمعطيات التاريخية الشخصية التي يماط اللثام عنها.
