ميخائيل يوريفيتش ليرمنتوف (وُلد في 15 أكتوبر 1814 وتوفي في 27 يوليو 1841) أديب روسي رومانتيكي يُدعى أحياناً "شاعر القوقاز. أحد أهم الشعراء الروس بعد وفاة ألكساندر بوشكين.

يجسد ليرمنتوف أسطورة من الأساطير التي شغلت الإنسان منذ القدم عن طريق شعره العظيم، إنها روح عزرائيل الذي خالف الرب وعصاه كما جاء في التوراة، فما كان من الرب إلا أن حوله إلى روح تحمل الشر، وتنشر الرعب. فيأتي ليرمنتوف ليسقط مأساة هذه الأسطورة على الواقع، فيغير بالأسماء والأماكن مع الحفاظ على الفكرة الأساسية.
هذه ملحمة الصراع بين الخير والشر وضعها الشاعر بروح رومانسية وبلغة شعرية رائعة، وتعتبر ترجمتها إلى العربية حدثاً مهماً.
