الصدفة في حياتي لعبت في كل الأدوار المهمة والحاسمة. لم يحصل لي شيء مهم في حياتي إلا وكانت الصدفة خالِقتهُ.
صادف ان أنهيت اختصاص طب الاطفال وحصولي على الجنسية اليونانية بنفس الوقت بل و بنفس الشهر، فجلست افكر بماذا يمكنني ان أقدمه لهذا البلد العزيز كأعتراف له بالجميل،فانا حصلت على شهادة الطب البشري منه وكذلك الاختصاص بمنحة من وزارة الصحة. هذا البلد الذي احتضننا كعائلة أجنبية بكل كرم و حنان واهتمام.
كان وقتها هناك سبيلان، إما الخدمة العسكرية أو خدمة طبيب القرى والارياف، فذهبت اولاً الى الدائرة العسكرية ،و بعد تدقيق الاوراق أخبرني الضابط بأنني معفو من الخدمة العسكرية لمدة خمس سنوات بسبب العمر، فسنـِّي اصبح أكبر من الخدمة الالزامية، واعلمني بأنني سأكون على قائمة الاحتياط في حال حدوث النفير العام لا سامح الله، وأعطوني الاوراق اللازمة بالأعفاء.
الحقيقة اسعدني هذا الأمر جداً،لأنني لم أكن سأنفع بشئ لو خدمت العسكرية؟، ولأن هذا الاعفاء سيعطيني فرصة لأداء واجب طبيب القرى والأرياف الذي كنت اعتقد بأن عطائي به سيكون اكبر وأفضل.
في اليوم التالي توجهت الى وزارة الصحة والى مكتب خدمة الاطباء في القرى والأرياف، وهناك حصلت لي صدمة غير متوقعة؟، فبعد مراجعة الاوراق، اخبرتني مديرة المكتب بانه نسبة الى سنـِّي واعفائي من العسكرية وحصولي على الاختصاص فأعُتبرتُ معفواً من هذه الخدمة الاجبارية ايضاً؟.
تأسفت كثيراً،كنت أود أن أقوم بهذه الخدمة النبيلة . لاحظت مديرة المكتب ردة فعلي وأسفي، فسألتني بفضول عن سببه. فاخبرتها بما كنت ارغب ،فرفعت حاجبيها تعجباً وقالت: - أنا قلت لك بأنك معفو من الخدمة ولكنك إذا أحببت وأردت عملها طوعياً فلا يوجد قانون يمنع ذلك؟. فاجأني كلامها الذي أعاد الابتسامة لوجهي فقلت لها: - إذا أنا أرغب طوعياً في اداء هذه الخدمة.
