هذا الكتاب يهدف إلى تعريف القارئ الذي لا عهد له بالفلسفة، وتعريف الطالب في الإعدادية والمرحلة الأولى من حياته الجامعية كذلك، الفلسفة، ورحابها، وأهم معانيها، وأسباب ظهورها، وحدود التفكير الفلسفي وفرقه عن التفكير البدائي والديني والعلمي، وما هو التفكير وقوانينه المنطقية، ووسائل أو مناهج دراسة ومعرفة الإنسان للأشياء، متوقفين عند منهجين هما المنهج الرياضي والمنهج التجريبي، مع تقديم تأريخ شامل لكل من العلم، والفلسفة في عصور مسيرة الإنسان منذ أن وعى إلى الآن، ثم استعراض لأهم حقول الفلسفة الكبرى في الوجود والمعرفة والأخلاق، واستعراض جملة من فلسفات العلوم وبذلك تتوفر للقارئ صورة واضحة وشاملة عن الفلسفة، كما تحضر أمامه مجموعة من الحلول الفلسفية لكبريات المشاكل الفلسفية، وحلول وأسماء المذاهب المختلفة لهذه المشاكل بالإضافة إلى تقديم جلاء ووضوح بالنسبة للمصطلحات الفلسفية ولغة الخطاب الفلسفية.
وبرغم أن الكتاب موجّه للقارئ العادي وطالب الفلسفة المبتدئ، فإن المادة المركزة المقدمة هنا تفي من حيث الدقة والإحاطة والعمق بمتطلبات إرضاء القارئ المتخصص تماماً، وقد كتب الكتاب في الأصل في حدود سنة ١٩٩٠، وأجرينا فيه تعديلات مناسبة، خصوصاً بالنسبة للهوامش والمراجع، لنغطي بعضاً مما استجد، بعد هذه الفترة.
