في هذا العمل يضع الدكتور "عبد الله محمد الشامي" - أستاذ الفقه المقارن والدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة بروني/ دار السلام - القواعد الأساسية لكتابة البحوث والرسائل العلمية، إضافة إلى قواعد تحقيق المخطوطات ليستفيد منها الطلاب الذين يودون الحصول على درجة الماجستير والدكتوراه في التخصصات الشرعية منها والإنسانية.
وللدكتور الشامي رأيا في المنهج يقدمه في مقدمة الطبعة الثالثة - من هذا الكتاب يقول: "... ولا شك في أن للمنهج العربي إتفاقا واختلافا مع المنهج الغربي، حيث أن الأول في عصرنا هذا يعتمد على المنهج الوصفي ويقل فيه المنهج التحليلي، وبعكسه تماما يسير المنهج الغربي، فيفرق منهجه في التحليل ويقل في الوصف، فتتبعت كلا المنهجين (...)".
يقسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة محاور الأول: يضم (15) نقطة تبدأ ب 1- البحث والمناظرة، 2- إختيار الموضوع، 3- الإعداد للبحث، 4- الأمور المشتركة في البحث، 5- تدوين المعلومات، 6- كيفية تسجيل المعلومات من المصادر والمراجع (...)، 15- المناقشة. أما المحور الثاني فيضم: قواعد تحقيق المخطوطات ويقسم إلى قسمين: القسم تحقيقي، والقسم الدراسي. والمحور الثالث والأخير عبارة عن ملحق تعليمات وفيه يتحدث الكاتب عن : وضعية الوحدة الدراسية وطبيعتها، الخطوط العريضة لمراحل كتابة البحث، ومسؤوليات المشرف والطالب ورئيس القسم في الجامعة.
