تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل أهم جوانب استراتيجية الاحتواء المزدوج التي تنتهجها الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. إذ تعكس سياسة الاحتواء المزدوج التفكير الاستراتيجي الأمريكي والأنماط السلوكية الأمريكية التي تتعدى حدود المنطقة ولا تنحصر في العراق وإيران تحديداً، فهي تأتي مكملة لاستراتيجية الاحتواء المرتبطة بالحرب الباردة والمنافسة بين القوى العظمى. ويمكن فهم معظم مظاهرها الحديثة في ضوء أهدافها وغاياتها السابقة. وأهم ما تريد هذه الدراسة توضيحية هو أن استراتيجية الاحتواء المزدوج، ورغم الادعاء بتوجهها نحو المنطقة، إنما تخدم مصالح أمريكية أوسع نطاقاً على الصعيد العالمي. إن معاداة إيران وفرض عقوبات على العراق إنما هما جزء من الخطة الأمريكية للاحتواء العالمي، وذلك في الوقت الذي تندمج فيه مصالحها في الشرق الأوسط بمصالحها الأخرى في آسيا الوسطى وأوراسيا.
