في العادة يكون الإبن أو البنت هما اللذان يقعان في مشكلة، ويقوم الأبوان أو أحدهما بحل المشكلة، سواء بالنصح أو المال أو بالتوجيه أو التدخل الشخصي، ولكن وضع الفتى خالداً بدا مقلوباً، فالمشكلة وقع فيها الأب، والإبن يريد حلَ المشكلة وتخليص الأب منها.
في القصة، يترك أبا خالد وظيفته الرسمية بعد أن أحيل على التقاعد، ويقع في الفراغ، الذي يقوده إلى التدخين من دون أي اعتبار لصحته، هذا الأمر أقلق خالداً الإبن وجعلَه يشكو همه إلى صديقه اللدود عبد المعز، وبدءاً معاً يبحثان عن السبب الذي جعل الوالد يعتاد التدخين بعد أن كان ينصح أبناءه بالإبتعاد عنه، وبعد طول بحث وتفكير عرفا أن الفراغ هو السبب، ولإن الشابين تربيا على قاعدة إسلامية وتفكير عرفا أن الفراغ هو السبب، ولإن الشابين تربيا على قاعدة إسلامية سليمة بدءا يبحثان عن الحل من وحي تعاليم الإسلام. فاستندا إلى الآية القرآنية في سورة مريم التي عمل فيها خليل الله ابراهيم عليه السلام في نصحه لأباه: "واذكر في الكتب إنه كان صديقاً نبياً" إذ قال لأبيه يا أبت لم تعبد ما لا يسمع ولا يبصر ولا يغني عنك شيئاً (...)" إلى آخر الآية، أما قول الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم "الدين نصيحة" فهو برهان آخر على وجوب نصيحة الأبناء لآبائهم إذا كانوا على غير حق. وهكذا تعاون الصديقان على طريقتهما في إقناع الأب بترك التدخين والقيام بحملة للتوعية بمضار التدخين، وكما قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "الدال على الخير كفاعله".
