إدراكاً من دارة الملك عبد العزيز وهيئة المساحة الجيولوجية السعودية لأهمية نشر المعلومات الجغرافية المتعلقة بالمملكة العربية السعودية وخاصة أسماء الأمكان ونظراً لتوفر قاعدة معلومات جغرافية واسعة لدى هيئة المساحة الجيولوجية السعودية نتيجة لتغطيتها أراضي المملكة بخرائط الأساس الطبوغرافية واحتفاء بمناسبة مرور عشرين عام على تولي خادم الحرمين الشريفين الملك فهد بن عبد العزيز آل سعود مقاليد الحكم في المملكة العربية السعودية فقد تم إصدار هذا العمل "موسوعة أسماء الأماكن في المملكة العربية السعودية ليشمل مجموعة كبيرة من أسماء الأماكن في أنحاء المملكة وإحداثيات مواقعها وتصنيفها، قام بإعدادها نخبة من ذوي الاختصاص الذين توفرت لديهم خبرة طويلة في هذا المجال لمشاركتهم في الأعمال الحقلية وجمع هذا الأسماء خلال مراحل إنتاج الخرائط الطبوغرافية التي جمعت منها أسماء هذه الموسوعة.
وتتكون الموسوعة من ستة أجزاء يضم الجزء الأول في قسم منه معلومات عن جيولوجية المملكة وجغرافيتها كم يضم مع الأجزاء الأربعة الأخرى قوائم أسماء الأماكن والتي تبلغ نحو (73) ثلاثة وسبعين ألف اسم ويحوي الجزء السادس خرائط وجغرافية وطبوغرافية للمملكة ومناطقها الإدارية.
