جرى ديدن العلماء وأرباب القلم منهم على تأليف كتاب يضم أربعين حديثاً في مختلف المسائل التي تهم المجتمع الإسلامي وخصوصاً في مناقب العترة الطاهرة وذلك عملاً بالحديث النبوي الشريف: من حفظ من أمتي أربعين حديثاً مما يحتاجون إليه من أمر دينهم بعثه الله يوم القيامة فقيهاً عالماً. وفي هذا الإطار يجمع الشيخ محمد رضا الطبسي (1317-1405ه) في هذا الكتاب أربعين حديثاً في فضائل أمير المؤمنين.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى "نجم الدين الطبسي" بتحقيقه فاهتم بـ: تطبيق النص مع المصادر التي نقل المؤلف عنها الأحاديث، إخراج المصادر وتكثيرها مما يقرب عن مئة وأربعين مصدراً. تنظيم الفهارس الفنية "فهرس الآيات والأحاديث والأعلام".
