يعرض هذا الكتاب تاريخ البلاد السعودية وعقيدتها وشعر هذه العقيدة، ويدرس العوامل المباشرة للنهضة الأدبية، مستعرضاً وضع التعليم وأنواعه، وتاريخ الصحافة السعودية واتجاهاتها.
كما يتناول الأدب التقليدي والحديث، إذ يختار من الأدب التقليدي الغزل والمدح والرثاء. ومن الأدب الحديث يدرس القضايا الاجتماعية والسياسية التي كان للأدباء فيها رأي في إصلاح مجتمعهم وفي اتجاه بلادهم السياسي.
ويدرس أيضاً القصة والمقالة، مستقصياً كلاً من هذين الفنين وتطورهما وتأثرهما بنظائرهما في الأقطار العربية، ويتصور مستقبلهما في ضوء ماضيهما وحاضرهما معاً.
وختم المؤلف الكتاب بدراسة لكثير من الآثار الأدبي المختلفة التي صدرت في البلاد السعودية وحللها في ضوء المنهجية العلمية في التأليف والدراسة.
إن هذا الكتاب يعتبر وثيقة أدبية ونقدية وتاريخية للحياة الأدبية السعودية المعاصرة.
