يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يتتبع البنى العميقة في القبيلة التي حالت دون اكتمال فكرة الدولة في البحرين. وهو يغطي تقريبًا أرشيف الأحداث في البحرين خلال القرن العشرين وحتى السبعينيات.
في العام 1974، أخذت إجازة دراسية وذهبت أنا وعائلتي إلى البحرين، اخترت عنواناً لكتابي "القبيلة والدولة في البحرين" فالقبيلة سبقت الدولة كعامل أكثر أهمية في التنظيم.
يتناول هذا الكتاب، على وجه الخصوص، تأثير الحكم الإستعماري وإنتاج النفط على نظام السلطة ومعطياته الإجتماعية.
بدلت إصلاحات 1923 التحالفات القبلية وأعطت الحكم وسائل جديدة للتدخل السياسي، فاستحدثت نظاماً هرميّاً للسلطة، الأمر الذي عزز، ولم يضعف، قوة العائلة الحاكمة ونفوذها.
وساهم النفط في تغيير الأساس التقليدية للإنتاج والعمل، فحوّل القواعد الإجتماعية للسلطة وخلق من ثَمّ صيغاً سياسية جديدة، وهكذا بدأت تظهر، في الخمسينيات والستينيات من هذا القرن، قوى إجتماعية وسياسية جديدة قوامها الموظفون والمثقفون والعمال، تتحدى وبطرق مختلفة، شرعية الحكم وسلطته.
