هذه الشخصية المترجرجة، التي تظهر الشيء وضدّه على نحو يجعل القارئ يحار في تصنيفه: هل هو أحمق أم إنسان بالغ الذكاء، وطني، مخلص للملكية أم يعتبرها "ملكية حمقاء إلى درجة أنه يجب أن لا تكون موجودة على الإطلاق"... جهول أو مثقف... مراقب دقيق للطبيعة البشرية وواثق الإستنتاج أم هو عكس ذلك؟...
أضف إلى ذلك أنه لا يسع القارئ إلا أن يربط بين شخصيته وشخصية مبدعه... فيلاحظ تارة تشابهاً يكاد يلامس التماثل، ويرى طوراً خلافاً يبلغ حدّ التعاكس... وكأني به يلهث وراء صفات كان يودُّ الإرتباط بها...
كلمة أخيرة حول هذه الرواية الرائعة: إن ترجمتها إلى لغة أخرى غير التشيكيّة، لا بد ستجعل بعض النواحي المرهفة تضيع مع الترجمة: إن لغة شفيك هي شفيك نفسه... ولسوء الحظ فإنه من المستحيل ترجمتها إلى أية لغة أخرى دون المخاطرة أن تفقد شيئاً من صورته وعصره وبنيته.
