يوسف العاني (1 يوليو 1927- 10 اكتوبر 2016)، وهو ممثل ومخرج وفنان عراقي مشهور من مواليد بغداد. ولقد نشأ في محلة بغدادية شعبية قديمة تعرف بـمحلة (سوق حمادة) تقع وسط بغداد ويبدو أنه قد أخذ الكثير من أصول وركائز وأشكال كتاباته المسرحية من اجواء وملاذات محلته تلك. وتوفي في احدى مستشفيات الأردن في تاريخ 10 تشرين الأول 2016.

في بدايات كتاباتي للمسرح. لم أكن أفكر إلا باصطياد الأفكار التي تمس الناس من قريب أو بعيد، وأنا في كل ما أكتب أسخر من الواقع الرديء المرفوض. أشير إليه بشيء من المبالغة كي أقرّب الصورة وأرسم التناقض بين ما هو كائن وما يجب أن يكون، ومع هذا التصور والتصوير لخلق حالة من الهزل المرّ في أكثر من موقع أو موقف.. ولم أكن أعرف آنذاك الخمسينات (الكوميديا السوداء) أو ما أشبه. كانت الأفكار تتزاحم عندي واقف أمام بعض منها مكتوف اليدين لا أستطيع الإمساك بالقلم كي أعبّر عنها من خلال مسرحية أكتبها أو فصل تمثيلي بجسد تلك الأفكار، لقد كانت قدرتي آنذاك عاجزة عن استلهام رسائل الإعداد الفني المتلائم مع الصيغ المسرحية المطلوبة أو الذي يوفق بين هذه الأفكار وبين الشكل الذي يمكن من خلاله التعبير عنها- أي الأفكار-. واحدة من تلك الحالات التي اختزنتها في نفسي ذلك العجز الذي يحسه الإنسان أحياناً أمام ما يحيط به ليظل متسائلاً لماذا يحدث هذا؟ وأن الإنسان قاصر على أن يفسر أسباب هذه الظواهر المؤسية والمؤلمة؟ أم أن قوة متسلطة عليه تشلّ طاقة إدراكه لجوهر مأساته؟
