تم الاحتفال بالقدس عاصمة للثقافة العربية في عام 2009، ونتيجة للظروف التي تعانيها المدينة بسبب وجود الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لها، فقد احتفل كثير من الدول العربية بهذا الحدث، ضمن فعاليات خاصة بها تضامناً مع المدينة الأسيرة. وقد ساهمت دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة بهذه الاحتفالات الثقافية، وشارك مركز الإمارات للدراسات والبحوث الاستراتيجية بهذه المناسبة من خلال ندوة علمية عن القدس حملت عنوان مستقبل مدينة القدس، انعقدت في 25 أيار/مايو 2009، ودُعي إليها بعض الباحثين المتخصصين للمشاركة فيها، بالإضافة إلى دعوة بعض الشخصيات العربية التي لها تماس مع المدينة وأحوالها وواقعها وقضاياها.
إن مدينة القدس مميزة في كل المجالات الدينية والثقافية والتاريخية والاستراتيجية؛ فهي ملتقى الأديان السماوية الثلاثة. إن تاريخ المدينة مفتاح مهم لفهم واقعها المعاصر وما تعانيه من تمزق، فقد بنيت في نهاية الألف الرابعة قبل الميلاد على يد اليبوسيين الذين هاجروا من جزيرة العرب واستقروا في فلسطين وأسموها يبوس وأورسالم. وتعرضت المدينة للغزو من قبل معظم الإمبراطوريات القديمة. وبقيت كذلك حتى الفتح الإسلامي لها في عام 15هـ عندما تسلمها الفاروق عمر بن الخطاب، ووضع لها قواعد التعايش السلمي بين سكانها، رغم اختلاف أديانهم ومذاهبهم.
إن القدس تتأكل في كل لحظة، ومستقبلها لا ينبئ بخير، مادامت السيطرة على واقعها لإسرائيل التي تبتلعها كل يوم بالمزيد من المستوطنات والمستوطنين، وتقوم بطرد سكانها الأصليين بهدم بيوتهم ومصادرتها ومنع الإقامة فيها، أو ببناء الجدار العازل، أو السعي إلى أسرلة سكانها. إن القدس تحتاج إلى موقف موحد شجاع لوقف مصادرتها، في مقدمة لاستردادها.
