لقد اندفعت للكتابة في موضوع هذه الجريمة الواحدة والمتسلسلة والمتكررة في النمط والأسلوب وإن اختلفت في الزمن وهي أحادية المجرم أو ثنائيته. إن أهم ما لفت نظري في هذه الجريمة لا لكونها قد هزت مشاعر الرأي العام البريطاني ومن بعده الرأي العالمي، ولا لكونها قد صعدت إلى مستوى الإعلام الدولي، ولا لأنه قد راح ضحيتها العديد من الفتيات البريئات. إذ أن كل ذلك يحدث هنا وهناك وفي أزمنة متغيرة وأمكنة مختلفة. إلا أن المقبرة التي اختارها المجرم وطريقة حشره جثث ضحاياه فيها وهي داره رقم 25 شارع كرومويل والذي أطلقت عليه الصحف البريطانية اسم "بيت الرعب"، هو أقوى ما دفعني للكتابة عن هذه الجريمة المروعة، خاصة عندما شاهدت على شاشة التلفزيون في لندن عرض هذه المقبرة وكيف تم للشرطة الحفر في هذا الدار وفي حديقته وجدرانه كي يخرجوا الجثث التي كانت مدفونة فيه منذ عشرين سنة تقريباً. لقد كان حقاً منظراً مؤلماً يعبّر عن أشنع جرائم هذا العصر لذلك أطلقت على كتابي هذا عنوان "كبرى جرائم العصر".
لقد حاولت وأنا أسرد جوانب هذه الجرائم وأسبابها وطرق تنفيذها أن أكون حريصاً وقدر المستطاع كي أتجنب ذكر المجرم أو المجرمين الزوج والزوجة. لكن وفي الوقت نفسه كان لا بد لي وأنا أشير ولو باقتضاب شديد إلى البعض من هذه الأعمال لما اقتضاه سرد القصة ومسيرة الإجرام ولكي يكون التعبير عنها قد أخذ معناه ويبقى للقارئ الكريم استقراء عمق الوصف والقصد من السياق.
