عبر صفحات هذا الكتاب يعرض العلاّمة أحمد تيمور باشا قصيدة بعنوان "دالية عدي بن الرقاع في مدح الخليفة الوليد بن عبد الملك الأموي" لمؤلفها الشاعر عدي بن الرقاع المتوفي سنة (95ه).
وعنها – أي القصيدة – أن عديّاً أنشدها الوليد وعنده كُثيّر (الشاعر)، وكان قد بلغه من تحد أنه يطعن على شعره ويقول: هذا شعرٌ حجازيٌ مقروءٌ إذا أصابه قرُّ الشام جمد وهلك، فكلما أتى عديّ على قوله:
وقصيدة قد بتُّ أجمع بينها / حتى أقوم ميلها وسنادها.
قال له كثير: لو كنت مطبوعاً أو فصيحاً أو عالماً، لم تأتِ فيها بميلٍ ولا سنادٍ فتحتاج إلى أن تقومها، ثم أنشد:
نظر المثقف في كعوب قناته / حتى يقيمَ ثقافة مُنادها.
وهكذا تصور القصيدة صورة عن النوادر في الخواطر لدى شعراء العربية، ومجالس الشعر وما يقال فيها من ثناء للملوك والقادة، وتفنن الشعراء في هذا الكتاب.
