لقد كتب هذا البحث في الأصل باللغة الإنكليزية وقدم كأطروحة للدكتوراه إلى جامعة لندن بعنوان: The Umayyad Calpgate 65-86/684-705, A Political Study. وهذا البحث ما هو إلا محاولة لدراسة الأوضاع السياسية خلال إحدى وعشرين عاماً من فترة الخلافة الأموية-وهي خلافة عبد الملك بن مروان-تلك الفترة المزدحمة بالأحداث السياسية المضطربة. ولا شك أن لهذه الفترة من التاريخ الإسلامي أهمية خاصة لأنها فترة إعادة توحيد العرب وترسيخ الاستقرار والهدوء في العالم الإسلامي/ ذاك الاستقرار الذي ظهرت نتائجه فيما بعد بموجة الفتوحات الواسعة والأعمال العمرانية التي شهدتها خلافة الوليد بن عبد الملك بن مروان.
ويشكو العصر الأموي بصورة عامة لا من قلة الباحثين فحسب بل من الدراسة الموضوعية-إلا في النادر-أيضاً. وقد يرجع هذا أنى أن هذا العصر كان قد شهد اختلاف الاتجاهات والتيارات وتباينها، واشتباك المصالح وتعارضها، وكذلك تناقض الآراء مما قاد إلى التردد والتهيب من دراسته، لذا فقد استهدف الدكتور "عبد الأمير دكسن أن قدم للقارئ العربي هذ1 البحث المتواضع عن هذه الفترة من العصر الأموي بأسلوب جديد يعير العوامل الاقتصادية والاجتماعية أهمية كبيرة في تحليل الأوضاع السياسية دون إهمال للعوامل الأخرى المحركة لأحداث التاريخ, كما حاولت جهده أن يبتعد عن التعويل والمبالغة وأن لا ينساق وراء الخيال والعاطفة رائده في ذلك إظهار الحقيقة التاريخية.
"إن الكتاب جهد قيم وهو ليس مجموعة من السير بل إنه عرض ورصد للتيارات السياسية والاجتماعية وللحركات المعارضة التي زخر بها ذلك العصر. والقارئ يخرج من قراءته للكتاب بصورة كاملة واضحة المعالم لذلك العصر المصطحب صيغت بأسلوب علمي متين. لقد كان المؤلف جاداً حقاً وصبوراً وقد غربل أكداس الروايات المختلفة وقارن بينها واختار أكثرها موضوعية ودقة ومتانة.
