الأستاذ جميل بشير واحد ممن أسهموا بالعمل الجاد بالموسيقى العربية كونه صاحب مدرسة في الموسيقى وعلومها وله أسلوبه الخاص في المسار نحو حياة موسيقية عربية أصيلة. وبعد مضي خمسة وثلاثون عاماً وبعد حين من تأسيس معهد الفنون الجميلة في العراق وجد الأستاذ جميل بشير الحاجة ماسة الى تأليف كتاب في أصول دراسة العود وكان ذلك عام 1961 بجزأين مستقلين مصنفاً الى ست مراحل دراسية ويحمل في ثناياه كم كبير من التمارين المتقنة والسماعيات والبشارف والقطع الموسيقية للمؤلف ولمؤلفين مبدعين آخرين وقد جاءت هذه المادة العلمية حلاً للمشاكل والمتاعب التي يعاني منها طلبة المعاهد الموسيقية كافة بسبب قلة الكتب الموسيقية الخاصة لدراسة الموسيقى في هذه المعاهد وما يترتب على عاتق الطلبة من جراء الحصول على التمارين والمؤلفات الموسيقية. وبالنظر لأهمية هذه المادة فقد اعتنى "حبيب ظاهر العباس" بتحويل كافة مدوناته الموسيقية المدرجة في هذا المؤلف بجزئيه الى طريقة التدوين الموسيقي المتداول حالياً مع الإلتزام بأمانة النقل حفاظاً على سلامة مدوناته وكذلك قام بتصحيح بعض الأخطاء المطبعية القديمة مجتهداً بذلك بجمع الجزأين بكتاب واحد.
