يرصد هذا الكتاب إهتمام الرهبانية اليسوعية بالبلاد العربية والإسلامية عامةً وبآدابها خاصة، إذ كان للرهبان اليسوعيين أثر ملحوظ في حقل اللغة العربية وآدابها.
إن في عصر النهضة أو في عصرنا الراهن، وقد أشار إلى ذلك، في مَن أشار، العلامة الأب لويس شيخو (توفي سنة 1927)، في كتابه المشهور "تاريخ الآداب العربية في القرن التاسع عشر والربع الأول من القرن العشرين".
من هنا، جاء إهتمام المؤلف / الأب كميل حشيمة اليسوعي لإكمال ما شرع فيه شيخو ومن سبقه من الدارسين فوضع كتابه "اليسوعيّون والآداب العربية والإسلامية: سيروآثار" وهو مشروع كتاب أقرب إلى المعجم منه إلى التاريخ، حيث يقوم المؤلف بعرض مختصر لجذور إهتمام اليسوعيون بالآداب العربية والإسلامية، ثم يسلط الضوء على أهم المجالات التي خاضوا فيها كاللغة والنقد والمدرسيّات والروحيّات وسواها، هذا في المرحلة الأولى من الكتاب، أما المرحلة الثانية وهي الأطول والأوسع، فيتناول فيها المؤلف، بحسب الترتيب الألفبائي، جميع اليسوعيون، أغربيّين كانوا أم شرقيين، الذين ألفوا بالعربية كتباً أو مقالات ذات شأن، حيث تناولت مادة الكتاب ثلاث نواحٍ: إحداها سيرة الراهب موضوع الدراسة مع التركيز على الناحية الأدبية فيها، والثانية لائحة مؤلفاته إلى جانب ما كُتبَ عن تلك المؤلفات من مقالاتٍ نقدية.
وفي ختام العمل يورد المراجع التي تناولت صاحب السيرة...
من الآباء اليسوعيون الذين يضمهم هذا الكتاب نذكر: آجيا، بشير (1883- 1952)، أبو جودة صلاح (1961)، أبي هيلاء، عبد الله (1925- 1968)، أبيلا، شارل (1876- 1946)، إده، جبرائيل (1848- 1914)، إده، خليل (1870- 1942)... وآخرون.
