تعود الوصفات الطبية في كثير من الأحيان، في يومنا هذا، إلى النباتات والأعشاب الطبية وإلى الطب التقليدي والعلاجات الشعبيّة والتي تأتي كلها في خانة الطب العربي-الإسلامي الذي لعب خلال أربعة قرون دوراً راءداً في تقدم العلوم.
وبنية لإظهار هذا الدور الذي لعبه العرب والمسلمون في هذا الدور الحضاري يأتي هذا الكتاب "الأقراببباذين على ترتيب الأسباب" وهو لمؤلفه نجيب الدين السمرقندي الذي كان طبيباً لاحقاً فتك به التتر عند هجومهم على هرات، سنة 1222، وقد كتب عدة مؤلفات، كان أكثرها شيوعاً كتابه " الأسباب"، وهو الذي نقلب صفحاته. والكتاب في أصله لا يضم أي فهرس، إنما إستطاع المحقق تجزئته إلى عشرين موضوعاً، تتناول هذه المواضيع مختلف العلاجات المقترحة لأمراض الأعضاء كافة إنطلاقاً من الرأس وحتى أمراض الجلد وخلافها.
ومرت عملية التحقيق كالتالي:1-نقل المخطوط بكاملها، 2-إستعمال إشارات التنقيط، وتوضيح بعض الملاحظات التي لا بد منها، 3-عنونة الوصفات الطبية، 4-ترقيم الفقرات والفصول، 5-وضع فهرسة للأسماء العلمية للنباتات وفقاً للترتيب الهجائي مع مرادفاتها باللغات الإنكليزية والفرنسية والعربية.
