هذه دراسة لغوية تأصيليّة لبعض معالم الصّرف العربيّ، وهي تتناول بالتفسير بعض الأوزان الفعليّة، وتزعم أنّ ثمّة صيغاً صرفيّة كانت سائرة في القياس والإستعمال، ولكن قانون الإصطفاء والإختيار قد حدّ من هذه الأقيسة، فاندثرت قوالبها، وانطمست قواعدها، حتى بات حالُ من يتعرّف عليها حالَ عالم الجيولوجيا وهو يتعرف من خلال أشلاء الحيوانات المندثرة، وقِدَد النباتات المتحجرة على معالم حياة غَبَرتْ، او شطآن بحيرة جفّت، أو قل كعالم الآثار وهو يَتَهدَّى بالأطلال، وبقايا المعالم، سعياً للوقوف على مخطط مدينة دارسة.
لقد كان من الطبيعيّ أن تسير هذه الدراسة على المنهج التاريخيّ، وأن تستأنس بعلم الدلالة، في الموازنة بين ما كان عليه كثير من الصيغ الصرفيّة المهجورة، وما آل إليه أو ظلّ عليه من معنى، أو ما يربط بين المعنى القديم والمعنى الجديد.
