إن كتاب "الأخبار الطوال" هو من المصادر التاريخية الأصيلة، فهو من أوائل الكتب المتكاملة التي وضعت باللغة العربية لتاريخ العزة القومية التي امتدت من زمن آدم عليه السلام وحتى وفاة هارون الرشيد سنة 842م، إبان الحكم العربي الذي امتد من الصين شرقاً إلى المحيط الأطلسي غرباً؛ حيث كشف ما ابتكره الحكماء والقادة وأبدعوا فيه في مجال الحروب والإدارة السياسية، وتتجلى قيمة هذا الكتاب التاريخية في أن مؤلفه قد عاصر بعضاً من حوادثه، فدون تفاصيل ما رأى وحقائق ما سمع، وقد قسمه المؤلف إلى خمسة محاور دارت مواضيعها على الشكل التالي: قصص الأنبياء وأخبار العرب البائدة، أخبار ملوك فارس، الفتوحات الإسلامية في زمن الخلفاء الراشدين، أخبار الدولة الأموية، أخبار الدولة العباسية. وقد عني الدينوري عناية فائقة بسرد تفاصيل الوقائع، وربط الأسباب بمسبباتها، فكشف عن العوامل الذاتية والاتجاهات الشعوبية التي قوضت أركان الكيان العربي، وفرقت المذهب الإسلامي إلى شيع وطوائف، أما لغة المؤلف في تاريخه ليست علمية ولا فلسفية إنما هي نثر فيه كثير من الفن، وفيه ميل إلى أحداث اللذة عند القارئ.
