من الضروري في أي ثورة وجود قوتين اجتماعيتين على الأقل، على أن تتبنى كل واحدة منهما أهدافاً إجتماعيّة مضادة للأهداف الإجتماعية التي تحملها القوة الأخرى، وإشتراط التضاد هنا يعود سببه إلى أنّ الكثير من الأهداف المختلفة قد يُتاح تحقيقها في ظل نظام واحد؛ فإن وجود قوتين متضادتين شرط حتمي وضروري للثورة الإجتماعية... والتطلعات الإجتماعية تابعة بدورها على الدوام إلى نظرة القوى الإجتماعية المختلفة وطبيعة فهمها للإنسان والكون...
يتضح من خلال هذا البيان أنّ الثورة تنبثق في نفوس الناس وفي قلوبهم على شكل إيمان ومعرفة ورؤية جديدة للوجود... ورغم أن الثورة الإجتماعية تظهر في مقطع زماني معين، غير أن لها إمتدادات في الماضي التاريخي للقوى المشاركة في تحقيقها.
ولأجل دراسة أية ثورة، من الضروري معرفة مكانة وأدوار القوى المتصارعة، ومنطلقاتها الفكرية، وأهدافها المتضادة التي هي وليدة الأنواع المختلفة من المعرفة، وكيفية نشوئها وتطوّرها، وبيئتها التاريخية، وأرضية نموّها ومصدر قدرتها، إضافة إلى الوسائل والطاقات المتاحة لكلّ قوة في مراحل بسط نفوذها، أو ما كانت قد استثمرته منها.
ودراسة الثورة الإسلامية في إيران بصفتها ثورة خاصة تتطلب معرفة خصائص القوى الإجتماعية المختلفة الفاعلة والحاضرة فيها، وهذا ما تحاول هذه الدراسة فعله، في خلال درسها للقوى الفكريّة والإجتماعية التي كان لها حضورها في ساحة الإجتماع الفكريّ في إيران عشيّة الثورة.
وكذلك بحث المؤلف في الخلفية التاريخية لكلّ منها، والإضاءة على الحيثيات التي ساهمت في وجود هذه التيّارات، أو تقويتها، أو تضعيفها...
وقد حصر الكاتب دراسته بين تيّارات ثلاثة: تيّار السلطة، تيّار التنوير بنسختيه الفكريّة العامة ونسخته الدينيّة، والتيّار الديني.
