يستقصي هذا الكتاب طبيعة اللغة الإنسانية والأهمية التي تتسم بها في دراسة الذهن، ويستكشف الكتاب على وجه الخصوص الدراسات الراهنة حول إحيائية اللغة.
ويستقصي المؤلف البراهين التي فحواها أن المنهج الأمثل لمقاربة اللغة يتمثل في النحو التوليدي الذي طرحه نعوم تشومسكي في الخمسينيات من القرن العشرين وتطوّر مُتّخِذاً مسارات متنوعة منذ ذلك الحين، ثم يعرض بعد ذلك للبحوث المتعلقة بنمو اللغة والتي ترمي إلى رصد السمة الأساسية الكلّية للغة الإنسانية، بالإضافة إلى رصد التنوع الذي تتكشف عنه اللغات متفردة، ثم إنّه في نهاية المطاف يعرِض لمجموعة متنوعة من المقاربات لتصميم اللغة وتطورها.
