في كتابه "هكذا...!! كنت في سيلان" يصطحب "معن بن شناع العجلي" القارئ في رحلة إلى "سيلان" وهي أول مملكة سنغالية –سنهالية- دخلها العرب الفاتحين والدعاة الاسلاميون الذين قدموا إليها من البصرة وحضر موت والبحرين والكوفة... واتخذوا منها قاعدة لنشر الذين الإسلامي في الهند والبلاد التي وراءها.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب عمله هذا: أفكاراً متنوعة وخواطر متفرقة، وإلهامات روحية، قذفتها في صدره رؤية المسلمين السيلانيين. وأوحتها الليالي والأيام التي أمضاها في هذه الديار. أما الهدف من هذه الرحلة كما يشير إلى ذلك المؤلف: البحث والتنقيب والسؤال عن جذور العرب الذين ألقى بهم دين الاسلام في هذه الأصقاع النائية وجاءت بهم إلى هذه الديار.
لقد وجد المؤلف في هذه البلاد (الهند- باكستان- أفغانستان) وغيرها الألوف ممن ينتسبون للعرب ويفخرون بدينهم ودين آباءهم وأجدادهم "الإسلام". على الرغم من أنهم لا يتحدثون العربية، ما يعني: "الوجود الاسلامي الواحد هو القدر الجامع وحبل الله المتين، الذي يجعل من العربي ومن جيرانه المسلمين الذين يحيا بينهم ويعيش ويتزوج كلاً لا يتجزأ، وعروة وثقى. هذا هو الغرض من تأليف هذه (الرحلة)" –يقول العجلي"-
محطات الرحلة: ...على أبواب سيلان، بين كاندي وكولمبو، حول المعهد الثقافي العربي، حول معاهد الارساليات التبشيرية في سيلان، الصينيون في سيلان امام التبشير المسيحي، في جامع كولبتي، في دار الثقافة الاسلامية في كولمبو، في كلية البنات العربية الاسلامية في كولمبو... الخ.
