لقي هذا الكتاب في العالم الغربي الأكاديمي خصوصاً والثقافي عموماً إهتماماً كبيراً واعتبر في مؤسسات ثقافيّة كثيرة كتاب السنة (2005) وترجم إلى 13 لغة، كما وصفه البعض بأنّه يقدّم رؤية "ليبيراليّة متفائلة للإسلام".
ويقرأ الكتاب الإسلام، تاريخاً وثقافة، قراءة منفتحة على مختلف مكوّناته العربيّة وغير العربيّة، وعلى مختلف مراحله التاريخيّة من مرحلة ما قبل الإسلام إلى الفترة المعاصرة، وعلى مختلف إنتاجاته العلميّة كالفقه والتصوّف من ناحية، والمشاغل الفكريّة الدينيّة والسياسيّة - الإجتماعيّة من ناحية أخرى.
ورغم سعي الكتاب إلى تقديم رؤية عامّة شاملة عن الإسلام فكراً وحضارة إلاّ أنّه وفّق في مواطن عديدة إلى عمق في الرؤية لبعض الأحداث خاصة منها ما يتعلّق بالفترة التأسيسيّة الأولى ونشأة الفرق السياسيّة والمدارس الدينيّة.
يساهم الكتاب، إضافة إلى مجهودات الكثير من الأكاديميّين من الغرب ومن العرب، في توضيح صورة للإسلام تبعده بشكل حقيقي عمّا يُرَادُ أن يُلْصَقَ به من دعوة إلى الفوضى والتوحّش وهدم لكل المكتسبات الحضاريّة الإنسانيّة، وذلك في إطار تأويليّ لا للنصوص الدينيّة فحسب بل كذلك للمسار التاريخي العام الذي شيّده كل سكّان ما عرف بـ "العالم العربي الإسلامي" سواء كانوا من العرب أو من غير العرب ومن المسلمين أو من غير المسلمين.
رضا أصلان أكاديميّ أمريكي من أصول إيرانيّة فرّت عائلته في بدايات الثورة الإيرانيّة إلى أمريكا، هو أستاذ في الجامعات الأمريكيّة متخصّص في المسألة الدينيّة في الشرق الأوسط، عضو في الأكاديميّة الأمريكيّة للأديان، وجمعيّة الأدب الكتابي، والجمعيّة الدوليّة للدراسات القرآنية؛ نشر إلى حدّ الآن ثلاثة كتب هي "لا إله إلا الله" سنة 2005، و"ما بعد الأصولية" سنة 2009، و"الغيور: حياة يسوع الناصري وزمنه" سنة 2013، إضافة إلى مقالات عديدة في أهمّ المجلات الأمريكيّة.
