هذا الكتاب لا يعني كثيراً بالدراسات النظرية-من وجهة نظر تعدية، حول فن التمثيل السينمائي، والتي هي قليلة جداً قياساً إلى تلك الدراسات والبحوث والنظريات التي تتمحور حول فن التمثيل المسرحي، بل يحاول الكتاب سير هذا الفن وكشف مختلف جوانبه واتجاهاته وأساليبه وعلاقاته بالعناصر الفنية الأخرى، وذلك من خلال التركيز على آراء وشهادات السينمائيين أنفسهم من ممثلين ومخرجين وفنيين، فهؤلاء أقدر من غيرهم على كشف خاصيات وخفايا بهم، حيث أن هذه الآراء والشهادات نابعة من تجاربهم الخاصة... المهنية والحياتية. هذا الأمر استدعى من الباحث الاطلاع على عدد كبير من المقابلات الصحفية مع الممثلين، والمنشورة في المجلات السينمائية، الأمريكية والانجليزية تحديداً، إضافة إلى بعض الكتب المتصلة بالتمثيل السينمائي. وغايته من ذلك الإحاطة بكل، أو الأقل، بأغلب ما يتصل بالتمثيل. وفي هذا الكتاب يحاول رصد المفاهيم المتعلقة بالتمثيل وبواعثه وعناصره ومصادره وتقنياته وتأثيراته وتحولاته إضافة إلى علاقته بالكاميرا والإخراج والسيناريو والمونتاج وبقية العناصر الفنية الأخرى، وكذلك المظاهر المتعددة التي تتصل بالتمثيل.
