إذا لم يكن ممكناً تحقيق التغيير النفسي الداخلي والأساسي من خلال فهم الدوافع فكيف يمكن فعل هذا؟ يمكن للشخص أن يكتشف بسهولة سبب غضبه، ولكن ها لن يجعل غضبه يختفي، ويمكن لنا أن تعرف الأسباب التي أدت إلى الحرب، فقد تكون إقتصادية أو وطنية أو دينية أو ربما يكون السبب كبرياء السياسيين أو عقائدهم وإلتزاماتهم وإلى ما هنالك، ولكننا نستمر في قتل بعضنا، بإسم الله، أو بإسم عقيدة ما أو بلد ما أو.. لقد خيضت خمسة عشر ألف حرب على مدى خمسة آلاف عام ولكننا لم نصل إلى الحب والرحمة بعد!...
البشرية كلها قائمة في كل منا، في وعينا، وفي هذا الجانب الخفي منا: لاوعينا، كل منا هو محصلة لآلاف من السنين التي مضت، وضمننا يوجد التاريخ بأكمله، لذلك تعتبر معرفة الذات أمراً بالغ الأهمية، إننا نتعرف على ذاتنا الآن عن طريق الآخرين.
ولكن إذا أردنا أن نعرف أنفسنا فلا يمكننا ذلك من خلال أعين الإختصاصيين، بل علينا أن ننظر مباشرة إلى أنفسنا.
