يصف مؤلف هذا الكتاب رحلته إلى مدينة فاس في المغرب العربي، وقد قسمها ثلاثة أقسام؛ أولها: الطريق إلى فاس، وثانيها: الدخول إلى فاس، وثالثها: في ظلال مدينة فاس، بدأ القسم الأول بوصف السفينة العتيقة التي ركبها، وقد غصت بركانها العرب واليهود والأمازيغ، واستفاض بالحديث عن المسافرين وأحوالهم، كما أنه وصف الشواطئ، وجبال الأندلس التي تراءت له على الضفة المقابلة.
وتحدث في القسم الثاني عن دخوله إلى سهول فاس الفسيحة، التي يعلو إحدى جنباتها خط جبال في الأفق، وقد كللت بعض قممها الثلوج، وهناك في المنحدرات صخور مرجانية مشعة بظلالها الزرقاء.
وأما القسم الثالث فقد خصصه للحديث عن الغرفة التي نزل فيها، والتي استضافه فيها القنصل الفرنسي، وقد هنأه عليها أصحابه؛ إذ إنه ليس في مدينة فاس فنادق، وعلى الزائرين أو المسافرين ان يخيموا في ساحة القوافل بين الجمال والبعوض والزنوج.
ولم يترك زاوية من زوايا مدينة فاس، ولا كائناً من كائناتها الحية، بما فيها البشر؛ إلا وقد وقف عنده، وأمعن في تصويره.
