خطت المعاجم اللغوية في اللغات العالمية خطوات واسعة، مستفيدة من مناهج التقنية الحديثة في الدراسات اللغوية والصوتية، والمدونات الألسنية، والذخائر اللغوية، ومما أفرزته ثورة المعلومات الهائلة. ومن هنا جاءت أهمية نشر المعاجم اللغوية سواء منها أحادية اللغة أو غيرها، ولاسيما أن علم المعاجم غداً علماً واسعاً ذا جوانب عديدة.
واللغة الأكدية تصنف ضمن مجموعة اللغات (السامية) الشرقية، وقد ظهرت في بلاد الرافدين منذ منتصف الألف الثالث قبل الميلاد، وانتشرت لتصبح في منتصف الألف الثاني قبل الميلاد لغة المراسلات الدبلوماسية والرسمية في الشرق الأدني القديم. وقد تأثرت اللغة الأكدية باللغة السومرية، التي كانت محيكة إلى جانب الأكدية، ثم حلت الأكدية محلها في بداية الألف الثاني قبل الميلاد. وبعد اللغة الأكدية أصبحت اللغة الآرامية هي لغة الشرق الأدنى القديم حتى جاء العرب المسلمون الذين حملوا معهم اللغة العربية.
وكانت اللغة الأكدية تكتب بالخط المسماري، على ألواح من الطين، على الرغم من استخدام مواد أخرى كالحجارة والمعادن والأحجار الكريمة الخ.. واللغة الأكدية لهجتان رئيسيتان؛ هما: البابلية والآشورية، وقد ظلتا سائدتين حتى أصبحت اللغة الآرامية اللغة الرسمية؛ فاقتصر استخدام الأكدية على طبقة الكهنة في المعابد وللأمور الدينية فقط.
