تكتسب النصوص اللّغوية القديمة أهميةً خاصةً، تنبع من كونها توفر المجال للبحث في اللغة والتاريخ معاً، وهما مجالان معرفيان واسعان يشتملان على جوانب فرعية عديدة. لقد لفت اهتمامي خلال المراحل السابقة من الدراسة والبحث في مجال اللغات السامية القديمة وجود مجموعات من النصوص الأكّديّة المتعلقة بموضوعاتٍ محددةٍ، ذات طابعٍ خاصٍ. وشعرت في الوقت ذاته بأني أميل إلى دراسة النصوص من أجل استخلاص الحقائق والمعارف التاريخية، والجوانب والمظاهر اللغوية فيها. ولهذا اخترت نصوص معاهداتٍ دوليةٍ سياسيةٍ تعود إلى القرنين الرابع عشر والثالث عشر ق.م، وتنتظم مع بعضها في أنّ البلاط الملكي الحثّي في بلاد الأناضول يشكل الفريق الأول فيها، في حين يكون الفريق الثاني إحدى الممالك التي كانت قائمة آنذاك في سورية؛ خلال مرحلة تاريخية تمزقت البلاد فيها إلى كياناتٍ سياسيةٍ عدّةٍ، اختلفت فيما بينها، وفي ولائها وارتباطها بالقوى الكبرى المسيطرة على المشهد السياسي العام في الشرق القديم آنذاك؛ أعني: الحثّية في بلاد الأناضول، والحورية-الميتّانية في الجزيرة السورية، والمصرية في مناطق بلاد الشام الساحلية. إنها تسع معاهداتٍ مدونةٍ باللغة الأكّدية، وأحياناً باللغتين الأكّدية والحثية، وبالكتابة المسمارية. وقد عُقدت بين ملوك حثيين وملوك عدّة ممالك شمل وجودها القسم الأكبر من جغرافية سورية الحالية؛ وهي مملكتا أوجاريت وأمورّو في مناطق الساحل، ومملكة تونيب في مناطق سهل الغاب، ومملكة حلب في الشمال، ومملكة نُخَشِّي في أطراف البادية السورية بين نهري الفرات والعاصي، ومملكة حوري- ميتّاني في الجزيرة السورية.
