ديمتري ضابط شاب ليس مميزاً بل على العكس طائش ، زير نساء يقامر ويبذر أمول هي امانة عنده .. ولكن مع ذلك يعذبه ضميره ، يريد اعادة هذه الاموال وامله معقود على والده ، والوالد الذي يعيش على هواه ، لن يعطيه ما يريد .
لكن يالهذا الشقي ! ففي هذا العربيد تحيا روح تعذبه وتمزقه ، وهو يقول مخاطباً أخاه النقي الورع " اليوشا" : رهيبٌ مصير الانسان شدسدةٌ آلامه ألا فالأكن ملعوناً منحطاً سافلاً، ولكنني لذن اتبعت الشيطان يا رب ، فإنني أظل ابنك ، وأحبك ، وفي نفسي رغبة ارضائك "
وهذا حال الأخ الثالث " الكسي " ، الذي يعيش ذلك الصراع والقلق بين صورة براقة في الخارج ومظلمة في الداخل .
ان قراءة ديستوفسكي تتطلب الانصات والتأمل .. وذلك من أجل الدخول الى الروعة الكمانة في اعماق الواقع ، وفي اعماق نماذجه التي يقدمها في هذه الرواية .. انه يدفع الانسان لأن يميز بين الخير والشر مستلهماً حكم قلبه ، ويرى انه من الافضل أن نهب الله محبتنا أحراراً من زن ننصاع له عبيداً
