هذا الكتاب مقدمة لدراسة فلسفة التربية وتطبيقاتها. ولقد تمت كتابته في الأصل للمستويات العليا لطلبة البكالوريوس الذين يعدون لمهنة التدريس، وللمبتدئين من طلبة الدراسات العليا -أو الدبلوم-الذين يتخصصون في أصول التربية وفلسفتها. أما الطلبة المتقدمون فيمكن أن يجدوا في تنظيم الكتاب وموضوعاته منهجاً جديداً يفيد في دراسة فلسفة التربية وأوصلها.
أما عن محتويات هذا الكتاب فهو يدور حول تأثير الفلسفات التربوية الأربع التي أثرت في التربية الحديثة، وهذه الفلسفات هي: المثالية، والواقعية، والبراجماتية، والوجودية. ولكن الكتاب لا يناقش أثر فلسفات التربية الأخرى مثل فلسفة التربية التجريبية، والتطبيقية لأن هذه الفلسفات امتداد للفلسفات الأربع الرئيسة التي يركز عليها الكتاب. أما عن تفاصيل محتوى الكتاب فهو كما يلي:
يتضمن الفصل الأول تعريف كل من الفلسفات الأربع للمفاهيم الرئيسة في أصول التربية مثل مفهوم: القيم، والحرية، والحب، والثقافة، والقوة، والتطور.
وفي الفصل الثاني يجري تطبيق هذه الأصول الفلسفية على قضايا وتطبيقات تربوية مثل المنهاج، والتعلم ودور المعلم، والتأديب، والفروق الفردية بين التلاميذ، والأبنية المدرسية، وميزانية التعليم، والمناخ المدرسي.
وأما عن الشكل الذي عرضت به هذه الفلسفات فقد روعي في ذلك الهدف الأساسي الذي كان من أجله هذا الكتاب وهو إمداد القارئ بمراجعة عامة ورسم إطار عام لفلسفة التربية بغية مساعدة الطلبة الذين يبدؤون دراسة هذا الموضوع وتطبيقاته.
