تعتبر صناعة السباكة من أقدم طرق تشكيل المعادن التي عرفها الإنسان، ونستطيع أن نقول إن قدماء المصريين كانوا أول رواد هذه الصناعة، التي بدأت في العصر البرونزي سنة 3000 ق.م.
وقد اكتشف قدماء المصريين أول سبيكة عرفة في التاريخ - وهي سبيكة البرونز - بالصدفة، وذلك بصهر خام النحاس المختلط بخام القصدير.
ورغم قدم صناعة السباكة إلا أن تقدمها عبر القرون كان بطيئاً، ويرجع ذلك إلى أن الصناع كانوا يحتفظون بأسرار فنهم ويورثونها إلى أبنائهم، وهكذا حتى تندثر مع الأحفاد في يوم من الأيام.
وقد شهد القرن العشرين تقدماً سريعاً في صناعة المسبوكات، كما زاد معدل تطور هذه الصناعة، على وجه الخصوص، أثناء الحرب العالمية الأولى والثانية، كما تطورت الطرق الآلية والأوتماتية في هذه الصناعة، كما ساعدها على منافسة غيرها من طرق الإنتاج التي نافستها وتفوقت عليها في بعض الأحيان، مثل عمليات اللحام والحدادة.
ولكن صناعة المسبوكات استطاعة أن تقف على قدميها مرة أخرى، وبدئت تزاحم هذه الصناعات بفضل التقدم الكبير في علم الفلزات، وإستحداث كثير من السبائك التي أمكن التحكم في خواصها لدرجة كبيرة، ثم الإبتكار المستمر لكثير من طرق السباكة المتقدمة، وإستخدام الأسلوب العلمي في التحكم في جودة المسبوكات.
هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا من تأليف وإعداد الأستاذة خلود مانع الزبيدي وهو عبارة عن موسوعة ميسرة في صناعة وتشكيل المعادن، ضمتها المؤلفة أهم المعلومات التي تتعلق بالسباكة وكيفية تشكيل المعادن حيث تحدثت في الباب الأول من الكتاب عن كيفية إستخدام الأفران الكهربائية، وإستخدام الأوكسجين والهيدروكربونات في عملية الصهر، وطريقة الصب المستمر، وصهر المعادن، وعن كيفية إنتاج الحديد...
ثم تحدث في الباب الثاني عن مبادئ التعدين حيث تناولت المواضيع التالية: ما المقصود بالتعدين؟ هيكل بنية الإقتصاد الدولي، الرواسب المعدنية، تصنيف المعادن الإقتصادية، مراتب الخامات، إلخ...
