استعمل أهل العربية مصطلحي التصحيف والتحريف مترادفين أحياناً، ومختلفين أحياناً أخرى، ولكن الشائع في الاستعمال هو تخصيص التصحيف بالتغيير بين الحروف المتشابهة والتي يفرق بينها بالنقط، مثل الدال والذال، والسين والشين، والباء... والتحريف خاص بتغيير جوف مكان حرف يشبهه في الرسم كالدال والدال واللام، والغين والفاء...
وقد جمع السيوطي في الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا أمثلة من النوعين مطلقاً عليها "التصحيف"، ففيه من النوع الأول: (أنهر، أنهز)، (ايتوا، ابنوا)، (يتفصد، يتقصد)، وفيه من النوع الثاني: (عليين: غلس)، (البياذقة، الساقة) الشارفة)، ومما هو من النوعين معاً: (تحزم، تخدم). والكتاب خاص بما دفع من التصحيف في رواية الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، أورد فيه المؤلف مائة وخمسة وعشرين خبراً مما يتعلق بتصحيفات المحدثين والرواة.
رتب السيوطي الأحاديث على "المسانيد" فابتدأ بمسانيد الرجال، ورتبهم على حروف المعجم مؤفراً من يعرف بكنيته كأبي هريرة، ثم أبتعه بمسانيد النساء، وسلك فيه المسلك السابق، وبعد ذلك أورد مجموعة من الأحاديث والآثار التي لم يذكر راويها، واعتمد جلال الدين في كتابه على مجموعة من المصادر-كما أشار في المقدمة، أهمها "شرح مسلم" و"مشارق الأنوار" للقاضي عياض، و"شرح مسلم" للإمام النووي. كما نقل عن الكتب التي تعني بالتراجم والمحدثين كمؤلفات البغدادي وابن عساكر والذهبي، وغير ذلك.
وكثيراً ما يعزو المؤلف الأحاديث والأخبار إلى المصادر التي نقلها عنها ولكنه يترك ذلك غفلاً في بعض الأحياء، أو يشير إلى اسم المؤلف دون تحديد كتابه، أو دون تحديد المكان، ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بإخراجه في هذه الطبعة محققاً ومذيلاً بتعليقات وفهارس للأحاديث، وللألفاظ اللغوية، والأعلام والكتب، كما واعتنى بتخريج ما فيه من أحاديث وآثار وأقوال وغيرها، وذلك حتى تسهل مطالعة ما فيه من موضوعات بسهولة ويسر من قبل القارئ لهذا الكتاب التراثي.
