"قال امرؤ القيس يتغزل بمحبوبته فاطمة (عنيزة)، ويذكر زيارة ليلية لإحدى الحسان: "ويم دخلت الخدر خدر عنيزة، فقالت لك الويلات إنك مرجلي، تقول وقد مال الغبيط بنا معاً، عقرت بعيري يا امرأ القيس فانزل، فقلت لها سيري وأرخي زمامه، ولا تبعديني من جناك المعلل، دعي البكر لا ترثي له من ردافنا، وهاتي أذيقينا جناة القرنفل، بثغر كمثل الأقحوان منوّر، نقي الثنايا أشنب غير أثعل، فمثلك حبلى قد طرقت ومرضع، فألهيتها عن ذي تمائم محول، إذا ما بكى من خلفها انصرفت له، بشق وتحتي شقها لم يحوّل، أفاطم مهلاً بعض هذا التدلل، وإن كنت قد أزمعت صرمي فأجملي، أغرّك مني أن حبك قاتلي، وإنك مهما تأمري القلب يفعل، وأنك قسمت الفؤاد فنصفه، قتيل ونصف في حديد مكبل، وإن تك قد ساءتك مني خليقة فسلي ثيابي من ثيابك تنسل".
شغل الغزل من الشعر الجاهلي مساحات كبيرة، حتى ليمكننا القول: إن أكثر ذلك الشعر كان متصلاً به أو مقصوراً عليه.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن الجهود الهادفة إلى إظهار الغزل الجاهلي بصورة دقيقة من خلال الحرص على حشد مجموعة غزلية متنوعة المواقف والمعاني والأغراض، لعدد من الشعراء الجاهليين الذين تميزوا بحضرهم البارز في هذا المجال.
وليس من خطة الكاتب أن يكون كتابه هذا نهاية المطاف، وإنما خصّص لكل عصر من عصور الأدب كتاباً يسلط فيه الضوء على نتاج العصر الغزلي بشكل يمكن القارئ من تكوين فكرة موسعة وشاملة عن غزل العرب عبر عصوره المتلاحقة.
