في الصدر الأول من الإسلام، شهد المسلمون صراعات ومشاحنات فكرية كانت على أشدها بعد أن توزع المسلمون شيعاً كثيرة بسبب ما دخل عليهم من ثقافات وعلوم لم يكن لهم عهد بها في ذلك الحين. وأخذت كل فرقة تضرب بسيف الكفر كل من خالفها في أمر من أمور العقيدة التي كان لها اجتهادها فيه.
فانبرى الإمام الغزالي لتأليف كتابه هذا الذي من خلاله حدّد الطريق الصحيح لبيان كيفية التفرقة بين الإيمان والكفر. متبعاً لذلك طريقة جديدة تعتمد إلى حدّ كبير على القياس المنطقي المأخوذ عن أرسطو، بدل منهج الاستدلال على الكاتب بالشاهد الذي كان سائداً عند المتقدمين من الأشاعرة.
هذه الطريقة بدت معالمها من أول الكتاب، إذ أنه حدّد الصفات التي يجب أن يتجلى بها العالم لكي تنجلي له حقيقة الإيمان والكفر. فهي لا تكون لأولئك المنغمسين بعلائق الدنيا، "بل لمن صقلت نفوسهم بالرياضة، ثم نوِّرت بالذكر، وغذيت بالفكر الصائب، وزينت بملازمة حدود الشرع، حتى فاض عليها النور من مشكاة النبوة".
وعليه فإن هدف الغزالي من هذا الكتاب الذي قسّمه إلى خطبة وثلاثة عشرة فصلاً، التمييز بين الكفر والإيمان، مخاطباً بذلك الصديق المتعصب أولاً، وحسّاده ممن أوعزوا صدر المؤمنين عليه ثانياً.
