يستخدم الإيطاليون إيماءة اليدين المفتوحتين باستمرار. فعندما يشعرون بالإحباط يمدون أياديهم المفتوحة أمام صدورهم وكأنهم يقولون "ماذا تريدني أن أفعل...؟ ويتم في هذه الإيماءة ضم الكتفين وفتح الكفين ودفعهما إلى الأمام. أما الممثلين فهم يستخدمون هذه الإيماءة بطرق معبرة عديدة وليس فقط لإظهار العاطفة ولكن أيضاً لإظهار الطبيعة المنفتحة للشخصية وحتى قبل أن يبدأ الممثل بالحوار. راقب الأطفال عندما يفعلون شيئاً يفخرون به، فهم يمدون أياديهم المفتوحة، ولكن عند شعورهم بالذنب، يخبئون أيديهم خلف ظهورهم أو في جيوبهم.
هذه تصرفات واضحة وحركات وإيماءات نلحظها دائماً عند الأطفال أو الكبار ولكن يوجد أيضاً إيماءات كثيرة ومعبرة يستعملها الأشخاص للتعبير عن حالة معينة يعيشونها أو يشرون بها والهدف من هذا الكتاب هو شرح المفاهيم الكامنة خلف هذه الإيماءات وتوضح القصد من كل حركة أو فعل مع إظهار العرف السائد لدى بعض الشعوب على بعض الحركات، إلى جانب هذا يهدف هذا الكتاب لاكتساب القارئ مهارات خاصة ليستطيع بعد قراءته من التمكن من تفسير إيماءات الآخرين ومقاصدهم الخفية.
