يدور هذا الكتاب حول النشأة التاريخية للفرق الإسلامية القديمة والحديثة، ومراحل نموها وتطورها، وما انبثق عنها من فرق جديدة وعقائد فاسدة خرجت بها من دائرة الإسلام.
ومهد المؤلف لذلك بحديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (افترقت اليهود على إحدى وسبعين فرقة، وافترقت النصارى على اثنتين وسبعين فرقة، وستفترق أمتي على ثلاث وسبعين، اثنتان وسبعون في النار وواحدة في الجنة).
ثم بيّن الأسباب الداخلية والخارجية لنشأة هذه الفرق، والضوابط المعتبرة التي بمقتضاها تصير الفرق مخالفة للفرقة الناجية.
وقد اعتمد المؤلف في نقل هذه المعلومات على الكتب والمصادر المعتمدة عند هذه الفرق، بالإضافة إلى عدد من المراجع ذات العلاقة بهذا الموضوع.
